Activity Overview

The Values Game is intended to be an aid in provoking and directing value and norm discussion.

The issue in this game concerns the (individual) exploration to the question:

• What do I as an individual (or we as a team or organisation) think is the right thing to do?

And next:

• What impact do the selected values have on my everyday actions?

By exploring various subjects to carry out this search, your ‘inner compass of values and norms’ will become manifest. The exercise is an aid to reach consensus of group, team, or organisation values and norms and their importance.

Used as either a team or group exercise for diversity training and awareness, or used as a personal coaching tool to provide awareness of our own personal core values at a conscious level.

The game may play a part in the process of discussing values and norms, but should not direct or impose any particular value or norm, as each individual's value should be respected.

140x Cards & Facilitator Guide with four suggested exercises

Cards are split into three categories

  1. Values: 63 cards, including General Values that apply to individuals as well as to organsiations, further subdivided into relational (association with other) & non-relational (personal)
  2. Group Norms: Rules, obligations or agreements that individuals in groups, teams or organisations conform to
  3. Subjects: Themes to narrow the discussion or provoke a challenging debate

Sample Exercise for Organisational Values

For participants, all working for the same organisation.
Spread the cards face up on a table. Ask each participant to answer the following question:

  • "Which of these values are important to me within our organisation?".

Ask participants to make a list of seven values and rank them in order of importance. Each participant should put a sticky note on to each card they listed, with their name and ranking of that value. Discard any cards with no sticky notes. Begin an in-depth discussion about the organisations values to reach only 8 cards by consensus. Discuss the following:

  • "Are there any values that are related to each other? If so, which ones?
  • Are there any values that could possibly clash? If so, which ones, and give an example of a situation where vlaues clashed."
