Activity Overview

Workstations is a team communication and information-sharing activity which is ideal for groups not previously experienced in working together. It is packaged as an extremely portable box of playing cards containing delegate briefing instructions, facilitator instructions and review suggestions within the box of cards.

This exercise demands both task and group leadership. It is an excellent introduction to 'chairing skills' and could be used as the 'warm-up' to a session on managing meetings, team briefing or working with focus groups.

It offers a good, practical illustration of team roles in action and can be successfully linked to work on effective team performance eg. using the Belbin Team Role model.

Activity Description

Activity Contents:

1x Pack of playing cards, facilitation notes & questions

Package Weight: 0.05kg

The team members are required to share information verbally in order to solve a 'matrix puzzle' - a simple process of elimination and logic.

The difficulty comes in not being able to write anything down - the group must identify other ways of remembering and sorting key information.

We also stock Teamwork & Teamplay Cards by Jim Cain, which has similar 'matrix' puzzles along with many other activities within the one pack!

I recently went on CPD course where the facilitator used your Workstations pack. I enjoyed it a lot and found it incredibly useful.

I’m holding an in-house team day with my training team next week and am planning to do a demo of it and see if we can usefully include it in some of our programmes! (Posted on 31/08/2017)

Workstations is a fantastic purchase and I have found many occasions to use it already, from team building events, leadership workshops, training energisers, and even dinner party entertainment. Very cleverly designed, with just the right degree of difficulty to make it possible, but very satisfying to complete. Incredibly intuitive to facilitate, and many positives to be taken away by everyone participating. (Posted on 28/07/2016)

Easy to run, fun to participate and great for effective feedback on soft skills and team working. What I love about it is delegates very quickly drop any façade and start to be themselves once they have fun and are under some pressure to solve a puzzle. That makes for great feedback and a useful, practical session.

I had the chance to use Workstations with a group last weekend. They got nowhere in solving the logic problem, but the design of the activity made for great discussion about "rules of engagement" for groups, task and maintenance issues, and leadership. (Posted on 24/03/2016)
Great for recruitment assessments.Review by Dave Thomas, Cineworld

Having participated in the Workstations exercise as a delegate during a Train the Trainer course earlier in the year, I decided to purchase a set to use at my own workplace. I have since used Workstations during a group recruitment session as an assessment tool and found it particularly insightful when it comes to observing team working, communication, and leadership skills. I will continue using them in the future.

I participated in a train the trainer course for Cineworld with Ann, and she used the workstations exercise, I was blown away with what I learnt from it. The whole training was incredible and it has had such a positive affect on my personal and professional life.

I have used the card [Workstations] 3 times now on the team I currently am part of, recreating the experience I had and trying to encourage the learning which we were exposed to. The team responded very well and even if an individual struggled, they saw the benefit and understood why I wanted them to take part! (Posted on 24/04/2015)

I decided to use Workstations directly with my team during one of my monthly Team Meetings. I as looking for a training product which would encourage communication and collaboration in a fun and challenging way and Workstations was perfect. It is very simple to use and can easily be facilitated by a Line Manager without requiring a great deal of training support. I have bought other products from RSVP Design previously and found Graham and his team to be knowledgeable and extremely helpful in identifying the right training tools for the right situation and I will certainly be using their products in the future.
