Activity Overview

Voyage Mapping provides a set of resources that allows individuals and groups to work with a powerful metaphor for exploring the past and preparing for future challenges.

The Voyage Mapping activity contains activities that enables participants to create visual business plans; potential project futures; review tasks, projects and processes they have undertaken to identify successes and failures. They then explore the critical incidents and draw from those key learning points which they believe will have value in the future. This reflective process helps to ensure that future mistakes can be avoided, problems and pitfalls can be anticipated and costly repetition or re-working minimised.

This activity can work with groups  anywhere between 2 and 16 people but around 6 per board is ideal.

We also have different versions for different group sizes:

Voyage Mapping Individual Coaching, Large Roll-up, and Standard Roll-up versions

Many individuals and organisations use the metaphor of a journey to describe their experiences.

  • “It’s been a long, hard road….”
  • “It’s been an uphill struggle but I think we’ve reached the summit…”
  • “We’re at a crossroads: we need to make a very decisive change in direction.”

This activity can work with groups  anywhere between 2 and 16 people but around 6 per board is ideal.

The activity uses the idea of an old-fashioned sea voyage to represent the way in which explorers brought back with them the accounts of the events and incidents which shaped their voyage and the ‘tales’ of what they discovered. These stories include new knowledge and skills that were acquired, dangers faced and overcome and accounts of the feelings, relationships and memories which they shared.

As these stories are remembered and explored, learning emerges that can then be used and applied in planning for future voyages of discovery. The activity is equally effective when used to reflect on an individual, personal or professional journey, or the journey of a group, team or organisation.

Cleaning Tip
After continued use some pen residue may be left on the maps, even if using write-on, wipe-off pens. In this case restore the surface like new by using a 'label remover' substance such as the one we use:

Value for Money
Purchased this product Feb-2016 as a potential aid/input to facilitated events for project teams in conflict, who need to reflect on their past challenges & successes and use these to collaboratively plan for the future.
We recently used the concepts provide by this tool, alongside others from other sources, in May 2016. Our meeting was successful although we plan to further refine our in-house methodology for these scenarios (teams in conflict). We will keep some, but not all of the thinking provided by the voyage mapping kit. (Posted on 09/08/2016)
