Activity Overview

We have developed the Education Sector Pack to include 16 of our popular and engaging experiential activities which cover five key areas of learning that we believe are essential in helping students and young people develop and enhance their employability and soft skills. Each activity allows for a standard class size of up to 30 students.

We have allocated our engaging and effective activities against each of the 5 key areas, to provide guidance for which activities suit your student’s needs.

Our activities mirror business environments and provide an opportunity for young people and students to get a feel for how working environments operate, as well as analysing their own behaviours and how they may need to adapt to different situations.

A colleague and I have primarily been using the Challenging Assumptions. Student feedback on the activity has been largely positive and also proved to be a good ice breaker at the beginning of the interview. They have found the puzzle to be challenging, but given time and guidance have at least begun to make steps towards completion.product as part of a group interview exercise for a new cohort of student volunteers at the University of East Anglia. It has formed the first of a two part interview and has allowed us to observe how well students work together, communication skills, problem solving and, of course, challenging assumptions, which we have linked to a work scenario, i.e. looking beyond the obvious / presenting issue. When I saw Images of Organisations used at an RSVP Design event, I was impressed by its simplicity yet effectiveness for a potential range of team situations. We used the product as part of the warm-up to a review/strategic planning event for our Library management group. 'Images' proved to be a great way to open-up dialogue within the group about the legacy of previous structural re-organisations and the type of departmental/team culture that had prevailed over the last 2-3 years. It also enabled the managers to see clearly the need to move forward from the change and develop more positive cultures. We mainly use Colourblind for school activities, however we also use Colourblind as part of our Student Ambassador training (undergraduates and post-graduates)  as a team building exercise, as it enhances communication skills and reflective practice. It also works really well as an ice-breaker if the group are unfamiliar with each other.

Using Colourblind with young pupilsReview by Keith Milmer

Colourblind has been designed for use in adult teams, but as a school governor, I was keen to explore its potential with young children.
Although the youngest group of children (7 year olds) had lots of fun exploring the shapes in a tactile way, the task was beyond them.

However, with a lively group of 10 and 11 year olds, the exercise was both achievable and fun – so long as a little extra coaching was offered by the facilitator up front, to help the youngsters think about how they would manage and organise the plastic pieces on the table in front of them while blindfolded, and to ensure that they focused on identifying one particular shape at a time.

In the Year 6 group with which I worked (eight children), there was a strong tendency for the slightly boisterous young lads to overwhelm the more reticent girls, but this may have more to do with the particular personalities round the table rather than stereotypical gender-based behaviours per se. Something for school teachers/facilitators to watch out for though!
On balance, a very useful exercise for bright young children (minimum age 10 or 11) and not just for adults
