Activity Overview

Developed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) - one of the world's top ranked leadership development training companies. RSVP Design are delighted to be their first UK reseller of their materials.

Experience Explorer allows participants to reflect upon their past experiences of leadership behaviour, whether the experience is from themselves, another person, good or bad. Leadership is developed through experiences, not solely through training.

The facilitator guide is very effective to help understand how to use the cards to their full potential and to grasp a deeper understanding of theory and research behind why experiences shape how we behave, specifically leadership.

The deck of cards are split into Experience Cards, and Lesson Cards, which are then split down into different key themes for what drives a memorable leadership experience, and themes of lessons learnt from the experiences.

It is recommended that each participant has one full deck of cards for a more effective training session. You can buy individual deck of cards here. 

Experience Cards

Example activity: Ask participants to sort through the Experience Cards and sort them into two piles, experiences they have had, and experiences they have not had. They are then asked to select one or two most memorable experiences which has shaped them as a leader. Each participant is to talk about their experience and the lessons learned from it. 

Lesson Cards

Example activity: Ask participants to pick the greatest lesson they have learnt from their most memorable experience in the previous round. Group participants together in a small group who have selected cards with the same theme, and ask to each talk about said experience, making notes on common or unique lessons.

We first started using the Experience Explorer Card sets in 2016 as part of a New Leaders Programme. They proved so effective in generating discussion and learning that I then included them as part of IDP (Individual Development Plan) sessions. We have run these widely and at various levels within the business, and they have always been thought provoking and well received. They are effective in both one to one discussions, and where we have run group sessions with work teams. The cards have proved to be a very valuable addition to the learning process.
