Activity Overview

BlueKit contains a selection of five different activities that focus on various aspects of team working, including communication skills, team management, and process improvement. These five activities involve teams manipulating various wooden devices through control strings which are attached to the devices, requiring involvement and effort from all participants and significant managerial control and objective setting.

The facilitator has a wide variety of potential activities to choose from. From relatively simple to quite challenging tasks, as described in the comprehensive facilitator video (above) & written guide. Each suggested task is also described in relation to the learning outcomes and likely behavioural and team challenges that the groups will face. With two full sets of materials provided for all five tasks, the facilitator can choose to introduce elements of cooperation or competition as required.

With two groups working, up to 20 people can be involved with the activity - and using observers who can observe up to two individuals, the kit could be used with up to 30 people with a single facilitator/trainer.

Activity Description

Activity Contents:

Full facilitator guide in pdf and hard copy.

An instructional video contained on a flash drive to help in setting up, running and debriefing all the five different activities contained in the kit.

The key item shared across the five activities is the 'Marionette Pole' to which the supplied strings are attached and held by the participants. The two Marionette Poles supplied allow two groups of up to 10 people in each group to be working on the tasks set.

The BlueKit including all five activities is contained in a bag small enough to carry anywhere, weighing 2.7kg and measuring 40cm x 38cm x 12cm.

1. No Words Needed

An excellent ice breaker or team building activity. This non-verbal activity requires the participants to manipulate the Marionette Pole, either to achieve the targets set, or to compete with a second team.

2. Writing Robot

A useful extension to the first activity or to explore some further teamworking and management principles, this activity turns the Marionette Pole into a writing device controlled by the team members. The tasks include a number of increasingly difficult challenges that will require strong team communication, cooperation and decision-making skills.

3. Balancing Marbles

This challenging activity adds a tray and marbles to the Marionette Pole and involves significant concentration, focus and some agility to deliver success. The exercise explores the team's project management, problem-solving and management skills and can also be useful in exploring how to deal with feelings of failure and frustration.

4. Winner

Similar to hockey, this can be set up as a competitive game, ice breaker or energiser activity to help change state during a training session. It can allow participants to generate a sense of team spirit and become comfortable with other team members, or to illustrate some key behavioural issues.

5. Team Ball

A dynamic and energising activity that is similar to basketball, but where a team leader has to formulate a work plan and a set of goals. Useful for looking at a whole business cycle from planning, to production, to sales, it is helpful in looking at the challenges in setting goals and improving performance as well as reviewing performance and drawing conclusions
